Depression, Nutrition, and Optimal Brain Function

Depression, the most common mood disorder in the U.S. is characterized by a low mood accompanied by low self-esteem and loss of interest or pleasure in normally enjoyable activities.  Most people are aware of treatment for depression through psychotherapy and behavior modification, and most people accept that drugs that alter brain chemistry also affect depression, for better or worse, but you can also change brain chemistry without pharmaceuticals.

Inflammation and the immune system have  strong relationships to depression and brain health.  In trials, depression behavior can be caused in people and animals by inducing inflammation.  Patients with depression show high levels of inflammatory markers on blood tests.  These same markers are also elevated in patients with other inflammatory illnesses.

It makes sense that depression can be helped with an anti-inflammatory lifestyle.  Proper diet, supplementation, exercise and meditation all have the ability to reduce inflammation and have shown evidence of impacting depression.  Chiropractic adjustments have also been shown to reduce inflammation in the body.  There is no one best supplement or lifestyle change to improve your mood because different people have different nutritional deficiencies and different lifestyle factors.  For the biggest impact, you should work with someone who can help you discover which changes will optimize your body chemistry and brain function.
