The Truth About Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a branch of health care that uses drug-free methods to restore optimal health to the body. Chiropractic was first distinguished from other health care professions by its focus on the nervous system and the use of the chiropractic adjustment or manipulation to balance the nervous system and improve the health of the whole body.

A chiropractic adjustment is applied to joints where nerves are plentiful and can easily be stimulated. Many adjustments cause a gap of the joint and a release of pressure on the synovial fluid accompanied by an audible “pop”. Most often, adjustments are applied to the spine where the large spinal nerves can be affected, but any joint of the body can be ajusted to improve motion and reduce pain.

Doctors of Chiropractic are known for their ability to relieve neck and back pain. In fact, in a recent study acute low back patients showed significantly more improvement with chiropractic than with traditional medical care1. But recent neuroscience also supports the concept of interrelation of the musculoskeletal system and the autonomic nervous system (the nerves that control blood pressure, digestion, etc.)2. Other body systems may be helped by chiropractic through this relationship.

There are many different types of adjusting techniques. At Inside Out Wellness, we take extra care to find an adjusting technique that is comfortable and effective for each client. Appropriate chiropractic care may also include hands-on soft tissue release, rehabilitation exercises, therapeutic ultrasound, electric stimulation, cold laser, or other therapies.
